Introduction

My name is Camille Walsh, and I am a junior at the University of Maryland-College Park. I am majoring in broadcast journalism, and my minor is meteorology. I someday hope to be a meteorologist. My two interests, journalism, and meteorology, are both fields that have a great deal to do with technology. In my opinion, technology improves, and makes the jobs that need to be done by both fields easier to do.

With journalism, technology makes news articles more accessible to a larger audience than ever before. For example, more and more news organizations have created Twitter, and Facebook accounts in order to make the news more convenient for its audiences. This website provides a list of all the news organizations on Twitter. (http://red66.com/2008/02/a-list-of-news-organizations-using-twitter/). Technology in journalism is also allowing citizen journalists to be heard. Which leads me to this question- Is technology making journalism as a profession more dispensable?

The field of Meteorology is very dependent on technology. Some technology that meteorologist use is: radars, satellites, and the internet. Technology helps meteorologists predict, and understand the weather. This USA TODAY article further explains in detail how meteorology technology improves, and helps the profession of meteorologists. (http://www.usatoday.com/weather/wtech0.htm) In my opinion, the abilities of meteorologist will be constantly improving as the improvements to technology increase.

This semester in journalism 150 I hope to grasp a better understanding on how technology will influence my future profession. In addition to this, I hope to learn how to use different items of technology (other than my cell phone, and laptop).

  1. I found these two links very interesting, especially with the fact that twitter is also now distributing breaking news. I'm interested to what your ideas are to your question about if you think technology is making Journalism as a profession more dispensable.
